Hydrogen Storage for Farming and Agriculture

Hermanos Energy, Netherlands
Challenge
The energy transition is in full swing. Green energy is no longer a novelty in fact, it's often available in abundance. However, power grids across the Western world are struggling to keep up. Despite this, we still rely heavily on fossil fuels, especially during dark, grey days or as fuel for our vehicles.

Hydrogen can play a major role in solving this, but it is often expensive, and the infrastructure can be complex. We believe in a decentralized approach, where hydrogen is both produced and used on-site. We've built a plug-and-play solution where hydrogen can be generated and immediately put to use for example, by converting it back into electricity using a fuel cell for off-grid living, fueling hydrogen-powered farm equipment, or using it directly for heating.

To make a real impact, we need a product that can scale. And to make it worthwhile for our customers, we must drastically reduce the cost of hydrogen. We can achieve this by tapping into the surplus of green energy already available. The challenge is no longer how to make green energy it's about having it available when you need it. In short, it's all about timing.
Solution
The Enapter EMS plays a key role in helping us reach our goals. Our solution involves multiple devices, so having a universal communication platform is critical. One of the most important features for us is that the Enapter EMS works both in the cloud and locally.

We train our algorithms using weather forecasts, electricity prices, and customers' historical consumption data. These predictions guide our decisions on when to produce hydrogen. However, real-world conditions can differ which is why we also want our system to respond in real time. For instance, we need to reduce hydrogen production when solar output is lower than expected.

This is where the Enapter EMS shines. We use its telemetry data to train our algorithms and its rule engine to execute our optimized plans, adjusting in real time based on local conditions. This approach allows us to produce hydrogen at very low cost a success recognized by the Dutch Hydrogen Innovation Award.
We also value the open-source community behind Enapter. We actively contribute by participating in discussions on the Enapter Developers Forum and by sharing our work on the Blueprint Marketplace.

We’re especially looking forward to the release of EMS 3.0, as the ability to provision devices directly from our cloud platform will be a huge step forward in scaling our solution.
